French Thyme, also known as ‘Stick Oregano’ is a compact, aromatic shrub with a bold, spicy personality. This shrubby plant features small, rough, leathery green leaves densely packed on woody stems, which give the plant its signature ‘stick’ look and name. When crushed, the leaves release an intensely sharp, oregano-like scent, much stronger than that of common Mediterranean oregano. During blooming, it produces tiny white to pinkish flowers, which add a soft contrast to its rugged form and attract pollinators.

French Thyme grows to about 2 metres (7 feet) tall and spreads outward in a neat, bushy mound, making it excellent for borders, rock gardens or sun-drenched containers. It thrives in full sun and prefers well-draining, slightly dry soil, showing excellent drought resistance once established—perfect for low-maintenance gardens across the Caribbean. It is a great fit for arid conditions and performs well even in poor soils, as long as they don’t retain too much water.

Aside from its hardy nature, French Thyme is cherished for its culinary and medicinal properties. The leaves are used in cooking—especially to season meats and soups—because of their powerful flavour. In traditional herbal medicine, teas made from the leaves are used to support respiratory health, digestion and general immune defence, thanks to the plant’s high essential oil content, which includes compounds with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also prized for its natural pest-repelling aroma, making it a useful companion plant in eco-conscious gardens.
