Hibiscus, Maple

Light Conditions:

• Full Sun:
  Maple hibiscus grows best in a location that receives 6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day.

   

  Partial Shade:

  In our climate, maple hibiscus may grow well with 4 to 6 hours of sunlight per day, primarily when conditions are too hot and dry. However, the colour of the leaves do not come out as red and rich when compared to being planted in full sun.

Soil:

• Well-drained soil that is rich (fertile) in nutrients. It may also grow in either acidic, sandy or less fertile soils. The plant has been reported to grow in humid conditions with low to medium altitudes, namely edges of forests, forest clearings, abandoned fields, marshes and savannahs.
• Mulch (such as grass clippings and wood chips) can be added to the surface of the soil to retain moisture and keep down weeds.

Watering Frequency:

• Water the soil primarily when the soil is dry or almost dry.
• Watering should be such that the soil is kept moist but not constantly soaking.
• Leaves tend to drop if the soil is left dry for an extended period.

Pruning:

• Prune (deadhead) stems or leaves when they appear to wilt.
• Pruning also assists in making the plant bushier.

Pollinators of the flowers include:

This variety of hibiscus may not flower. If it does flower, the colour may be either yellow or red lasting only for a day.
