Rosemary

Soil:

• Well-drained, light soil. It can grow well in slightly alkaline or stony calcareous soils. Rosemary can grow with maritime exposure. Rosemary does not grow well in heavy soils. The plant has been reported to grow in hot conditions and along dry and rocky places, particularly near the sea.
• Mulch (such as grass clippings and wood chips) can be added to the surface of the soil to retain moisture and keep down weeds.

Watering Frequency:

• Water the soil primarily when the soil is dry.
• Watering rosemary should be that the soil is not soggy.
• It is drought tolerant.

Pruning and Maintenance:

• Prune (deadhead) stems or leaves when they appear to wilt, look diseased, or turn yellow, purple or brown.
• Pruning can aid in stimulating new growth and keep the rosemary bushy. Harvested cuttings could be replanted or used in various ways.

Entire Plant -

Rosemary can be ornamentally grown and shaped as a hedge to make a beautiful and aromatic addition to the garden. Rosemary is a great companion plant with beans, cabbages, carrots and sage but is not well suited to be grown with potatoes. Burning the entire plant helps repel various insects.

 

Leaves -

Leaves have culinary applications for flavouring meats and foods. It contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, and it has be suggested to improve memory, concentration and digestion, and assist the brain and prevent brain aging.

 

Essential Oil -

The essential oil extracted from rosemary, has been used as a fragrance in cleaning products, incense, perfumes and shampoos.

May have adverse interactions with prescription drugs, such as those used to treat blood clots, high blood pressure and manic depression, and drugs that are diuretics.

 

Generally non-toxic when used in small amounts.

 

Though rare, very high doses may induce vomiting, spasms, coma and fluid in the lungs.
