Basil, Amazonian

Light Conditions:

• Full Sun:
  Amazonian Basil can be grown in a location that receives 6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day.
• Partial Shade:
  In our climate, Amazonian Basil may grow well with 3 to 6 hours of sunlight per day, primarily morning sun and afternoon shade in the dry season.

Soil:

• Well-drained soil that is rich (fertile) in nutrients. The plant has been reported to grow from sea-level up to 1,300 metres at moist to dry thickets or open fields, on rocky hillsides, gravel or sandbars along streams, and cultivated lands.
• Mulch (such as grass clippings and wood chips) can be added to the surface of the soil to retain moisture and keep down weeds.

Watering Frequency:

• Water the soil primarily when the soil is dry or almost dry.
• Do not allow the soil to dry out.
• Do not allow the soil to be soggy for an extended period.

Amendments and Fertiliser:

• Apply a nitrogen liquid fertiliser every three (3) to four (4) weeks to maintain a healthy plant during the plant's life.

Pruning:

• Prune flowers to promote bushy growth and extend the plant's productive life.
• Prune leaves when they appear to fade or wilt.

Whole Plant -

This variety of basil possesses antiparasitic and antimicrobial properties. Consuming a tea of the whole plant can be used to cure cases of dysentery.

 

Leaves -

The leaves and young stems can be used for its aromatic qualities and to flavour soups and stews. The aromatic leaves can be used as a decorative and fragrant garnish for various culinary creations. Dried, fragrant leaves can also be incorporated to make teas. The leaves possess antispasmodic and sedative qualities. The leaves are believed to help with respiratory issues such as coughs, colds and bronchitis. Additionally, it has been used to alleviate stomach-related problems and digestive issues. Topically, the leaves can be used to target various discomforts in the body. It can be used to treat parasitic activity that affect the nasal passage due to screw worms, by having the leaves are pulverised and inserted into the nose. The leaves can also be applied to the affected ears for relieving earaches. In addition, a rum-infused tincture made from the leaves is used as a topical solution to alleviate rheumatism. The crushed leaves are utilised in a wash for treating fevers and are massaged onto an affected baby’s stomach to alleviate colic. Also, a leaf infusion or a mixture of the leaf juice and seed oil can be used as an eyewash.

 

Seeds -

Finely powdered dried seeds can be applied to irritated eyes of children and can be used to treat film on eyes. The leaf juice and seed oil can be used as an eyewash.

 

Essential Oil -

The essential oil obtained from the leaves is antiseptic.
