Poi (Green) / Malabar Spinach (Green)

Light Conditions:

• Full Sun:
  Poi could be grown in a location that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.
• Partial Shade:
  In our climate, Poi grows best with 3 to 6 hours of sunlight per day, primarily morning sun, with slight shade.

Soil:

• Well-drained but moisture-retentive soil that is average or rich in nutrients. It prefers a sandy loam but can grow in other conditions. The plant has been reported to grow in moist tropics from sea-level to 1,500 metres in commercial agricultural settings.
• Mulch (such as grass clippings and wood chips) can be added to the surface of the soil to retain moisture and keep down weeds.

Watering Frequency:

• Water the soil primarily when the soil is almost dry or dry.
• Watering Malabar Spinach should be that the soil is kept moist.
• It can tolerate frequent rainfall.
• Do not allow the soil to dry out for an extended period as this will stress the plant.

Amendments and Fertiliser:

• Malabar Spinach is regarded as fast growing and should be topped off with organic matter ever so often if growing directly in the ground.
• For plants that appear to be stunted in a pot, we recommend a good slow release fertilizer, topping up as directed on the packaging.
• If you notice that the plant appears to wither, monitor the lighting conditions and the soil moisture, in particular.

Pruning:

• Prune (deadhead) stems or leaves when they appear to wilt, look diseased, look melted, or turn yellow or brown.
• Pruning can aid in stimulating new growth and make the plant bushier.

Calcium, Vitamin B (Thiamine, Niacin & Riboflavin), Vitamin C

Culinary applications of leaves being utilised as regular spinach and young leaves as lettuce.

Used in the treatment of malaria, melanoma, leukemia and oral cancers, catarhh, mouth ulcers, dysentery, stomach pains and anorexia.

Leaves tend to taste bitter when going to flower.
